ES|tatus: Reclaiming the Legacy of the Latina/o Caucus of ACT UP

(ES)tatus is a historical memory project that tells the story of a group of activists that hailed from different corners of the Americas and coalesced as the Latina/o Caucus of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) New York. The Latina/o Caucus was a dynamic working group mobilizing against the devastation of the AIDS crisis in the Latinx communities of New York, as well as throughout Latin America.

(ES)tatus honors the rich contributions of immigrants and colonized people of all statuses to the AIDS and LGBTQI movements by recalling their efforts and reclaiming their legacy. Through the Latina/o Caucus, (ES)status brings to light the historic parallels and intersections between immigrant status and HIV status, and the particular challenges, perspectives, and strategies that are common to HIV activists from immigrant and colonized communities in the ongoing AIDS crisis

The materials exhibited in (ES)tatus will be sourced from surviving members of the Latina/o Caucus and collected and exhibited by the artist, Julian de Mayo, with the consent of the LC.

They include posters, flyers, invitations, newspaper clippings, personal photographs, mementos, and videos.
