Rugby is one of the only sports in the world that anyone can play. If you are willing to learn, practice, and care about rugby, then there’s a spot for you on the pitch. It’s a sport that needs so many different types of players; short, tall, built, fast, scrappy, strong, smart.
A rugby team consists of 15 players divided into two groups; backs and forwards. When you arrive at your first rugby practice, you can expect to be assigned to either the forwards or backs.
Forwards are part of the scrum. They are known collectively as “the pack.” Rugby How describes them as “the players who use size and strength to get the ball and move it towards the opposition goal-line.” Forwards also participate in lineouts and do most of the rucking and mauling on the field.
Being a member of the back-line is more running-intensive than the forward pack. The job of the back line is to sprint the ball down the field. They use their speed and agility to score tries, as opposed to the forwards who tend to use strength and force. The backs set up in a diagonal line off of the fly-half, who is similar to the quarterback on a football team.
Come check out a practice and see how much fun rugby is for yourself.
