Boys For Sale | Mardi Gras Film Festival 2018
Boys For Sale | Tues 20 Feb, 6.30pm. Event Cinemas George St. TIX: bit.ly/2yS9KXn
Japan is notorious for its closed culture and intense privacy, which makes this doco interviewing straight ‘urisen' or ‘boys'; young men who sell their bodies to other men utterly intriguing. There is an honesty to their words, and a sense of being shown a side of them and the country that is rarely glimpsed.
A combination of interviews, shots of the most famous gay district in Japan, Shinjuku's 2-chome, where all the boys work, and manga depictions of the sexual acts being described makes this an immersive, one-of-a-kind experience.
Anyone who wishes to or has visited Japan will love this doco. The boys are predominantly straight, with some bisexual and gay members among them, they work out of desperation mostly, some driven to Tokyo by natural disasters such as Fukushima or tsunamis.
Through the personal, raw confessions of the boys in question, the director depicts an uncensored view of the larger gay community in Japan, and it is a sight to behold.
