Desert Hearts | Mardi Gras Film Festival 2018
Desert Hearts | Sat 17 Feb, 3.30pm Event Cinemas George St. TIX: bit.ly/2lYBQam
It's 1959 and Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver), a prim and proper English professor, has arrived in the desert town of Reno, where one can get a divorce in about 6 weeks should one require it. Vivian holes up in a room on a rundown ranch with a few good books to help pass the time. Yet whenever she catches a glimpse of the owner's reckless step-daughter, Cay Rivvers (Patricia Charbonneau), she's drawn a little further… out.
As the attraction between the two women grows the tension and humidity build until something's bound to break it, whether the storm that's brewing or the jealousy of Cay's stepmother, Frances (Audra Lindley).
Desert Hearts was the first unapologetic lesbian love story to screen in mainstream cinema. The digitally remastered version is as riveting, romantic and refreshing as a kiss in the rain. See it for the first or the hundredth time. Just see it.
Steeped in moody, classic country and western music, it conveys romantic longing and confusion with bittersweet intensity - Sight & Sound
