Memorial Park Pride

Memorial Park Pride is a two day, multi-generational, inclusive, accessible and educational event kicking off Pride Week in Central Memorial Park, a prominent landmark in Calgary's queer history. This celebration includes performances from local artists, family-friendly activities hosted by community groups, and workshops as diverse as our community, all free to attend. Scroll down for a list of our amazing workshops and talented performers. WORKSHOPS ~ August 24th: Queer Representation in Comics | 11am-12pm: Come on down and delve into the history of queer comics from the dawn of superman to present day with Tom Miller. Vogue Workshop | 11am-12:30pm: Interested in learning to vogue? With her knowledge of the five elements of vogue femme, elements of the old way, and understanding of ballroom culture; Katria Phothong-McKinnon (Muse) wishes to create a safe space for those to dance while working on their confidence and self-image. Queer Representation in Pop Culture | 12-1pm: This session is an introduction to the way in which Queer people have been portrayed in popular culture and media throughout history. Trans and Non-Binary 101 | 1-2pm: This workshop will explore the language, lived experience, and context of Trans people and their families. The workshop is an open braver space learning opportunity, all participants are welcome. Anti-Racist Organizational Change (AROC) | 1-2:30pm: What are the seemingly normal, neutral, and objective ways organizations do things that disadvantage racialized and Indigenous folks? Learn about what organizational racism is and ways to interrupt it and transform your organization with Anti-Racist Organizational Change training. Intercultural, Ethnic, Faith Dialogue on LGBTQ+ Refugees | 2:30-3:30pm: This panel discussion includes LGBTQ+ refugees of various religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds who will discuss together the challenges of integrating LGBTQ + refugees and newcomers into the local community. HIV Undetectable = Untransmittable ( U = U )| 2-3pm: This program provides easy access to information and resources that are especially supportive of this community with a specific goal of addressing HIV in MSM communities. QTBIPOC in the History of Burlesque | 3:30-5pm: Join Bea Lissima and friends for an exploration of burlesque through the lens of a Queer Person of Color performer. This seminar will walk through the history of QPOC burlesque performers and their legacy and impact on today’s art form. After the seminar, we will hear from all the QPOC performers and their own experiences before showcasing their art with the audience. Anti-Racism: Bystander Intervention | 3:30-5pm: Learn strategies to be an active and effective racial bystander, whether it's in public, in private settings, or online. Understand the difference between following "rules" and building discernment through action and reflection. August 25th: Connecting to Our Roots | 11am-12:30pm: Originating from Harlem, Vogue is a style of dance created by Black and Latino LGBTQ2S+ community members in the 1960s. This free workshop will explore the origins of vogue history, including houses, ballroom culture, and the queer POC movement. We will explore the five-movement elements of vogue: Hand Performance, Runway, Spins and Dips, Duckwalks and Floor Performance. Concluding the workshop will be an open discussion on the queer POC community led by House of Amazon vogue dancer and House Mother for House of Visalia and creator Van Vogue Jam. Trans and Non-Binary 101 | 12-1pm: This workshop will explore the language, lived experience, and context of Trans people and their families. The workshop is an open braver space learning opportunity, all participants are welcome. Reading with Royalty | 1-2pm: Reading with Royalty celebrates diversity and encourages children to look beyond gender stereotypes and embrace the exploration of self. Enjoy a storytime led by local Drag Kings, Queens and Monarchs, supported by our fabulous Library Lieges from the Calgary Public Library! Colonialism on Canvas | 2-4pm: This interactive session is one of a kind in the field of Indigenous and Two-Spirit peoples. This workshop creates a safe space between conversations and reflections between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples. Even if you are not participating in the art aspect of the workshop, you are welcome to attend and join in the learning and discussion. LGBT+ Refugee Library | 3:30-5pm: The aim of this free workshop is to reduce the prejudices that exist in relation to LGBTQ+ refugees. The fact that most LGBTQ+ refugees come from the MENA countries, Middle East and North African countries, which are predominantly Muslim and that most of these countries criminalize homosexual acts, can be the basis for them being described as homophobic societies. Through conversation with LGBTQ+ refugees or asylum seekers, visitors will be empowered to observe state homophobia through the prism of a nonexistent or weak democracy, lack of rule of law or poor implementation of the law, but not as part of a nation's culture. Movie: Outliers: Calgary's Queer History | 3-5pm: Calgary’s Queer History is a deep dive into the historical, social and political forces, which shaped the development of the queer community in Calgary. Featuring extensive footage and B-roll film from Calgary Pride in the ’90s, queer leaders recount a decade of turmoil, loss, and growth of activism and human rights. The film is a first-hand account of the frontlines of LGBTQ2+ activism at a time when the right to be out in Alberta was not legally protected, visible or developed. Spanning stories from 1960-present day, this feature-length documentary delves into the moments and victories, which brought an entire community from the darkness into the light. Sex Work in regards to Gender and Sexually Diverse Communities | 4-5pm: The sex work community is made up of diverse individuals with diverse experiences. Sex work is often looked at as a gendered issue, but this is not the case. Enhance your knowledge and awareness around sex work and related issues of human rights, harm reduction and discrimination. Learn about HIV Community link’s Shift Program, start to understand the sex industry in a Canadian context as we unpack Canadian laws and how they affect the sex work community. Learn how we can start to challenge stigma by using the proper language and terminology.
