The purpose of “UNCHAINED” is to create a healing space for intergenerational dialogue with topics aimed at educating to end stigma, build healthier relationships, celebrate diversity, promote empowerment, and foster family acceptance. Through this distinctive exploration of the LGBTQ+ narratives, while highlighting the unique cultural identity of Caribbean people, for the past three years, CEP have created a greater awareness of not only the group’s individual differences but also their shared collective stories.
Members gain support and guidance through a discussion on various topics such as coming out, family, LGBTQIA-related phobias, social norms, relationships and dating, sexual fluidity, and health/wellness. By promoting education, acceptance, and the importance of healthy relationships, Unchained is providing a support system to participants that are coping with rejection, depression, and isolation, while building a prideful and liberated Caribbean LGBTQ community in NYC.
The support group is facilitated by Julius Owens, a Licensed Psychotherapist from New York; a graduate of Fordham University with 7+ years of experience working in communities of color, specifically with Caribbean youth and adults in the boroughs of the Bronx and Queens.
Light refreshments will be served.
