Queer Roots is a multigenre musical showcase by and for queer people and the ones who love us. Queer Roots brings together musicians who are working in roots styles such as country, blues, bluegrass, folk, gospel, and Indigenous musics. As queers we are often uprooted from our families, dislodged and alienated from our communities. Roots are crucial for us for this reason. Like trees we have to grow our own roots, and communicate by means of those neural networks in the soil. Our leaves and needles catch the water. Our roots are sensitive, but expansive. We find refuge and love in each other, in our artworks and our musics. Roots connect us with our ancestors and our futures, and anchor us in the now. They call on our ancient feelings, the deep knowledge that intuitively drives our music, and sings through our swelling hearts.

Eli Conley titled his sophomore album Strong and Tender, but he might well have been describing himself. On stage he’s an earnest yet funny storyteller. His songs address big themes like gender, aging, and death through the concrete and immediate details of daily life: a stolen truck, a flopping fish, a dime in the pocket. Since releasing his debut album At The Seams in 2013, Eli has been featured in the Huffington Post and the Advocate. He’s opened for Grammy-winner Kimya Dawson and the Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, and founded Queer Country West Coast, a regular series featuring LGBTQ+ country artists in the Bay Area. At heart, Eli is a clear-eyed songwriter with high hopes for the human race. His songs urge us to love ourselves even when it feels like the world does not. You can’t help but sing along.

El Rio is 21+.

We're playing in the back room. Enter the bar and go to the back porch. Turn right, and then head down the hall past the bathrooms. The back room is through the open door at the end of the hall.

No stairs are involved in accessing the club or the back room. However, the bathrooms aren't wheelchair-accessible; neither is part of the back patio. If the club is crowded, it may be tricky to navigate with a chair.

There are some metal folding chairs in the back room, and some tall cushioned stools. Most people will be standing, but please don't hesitate to grab a chair or help someone else to one if they need it!

We encourage everyone to come to the event scent-free, but we can't guarantee that this will be a lower-chemical space, as the rest of the club will be open-access and it can get crowded. For information about how (and why) to go fragrance-free, check out Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha's brownstargirl.org/blog/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15.
